Are the RSA vial write on patches made of ceramic or epoxy paint?

Reference Number: AA-01090 Created: 12/26/2012 12:10 PM Last Updated: 09/09/2020 09:52 AM

RSA™ vials, both amber and clear that are supplied with the write on patches are made with a ceramic patch and NOT an epoxy paint.

Lower quality brands of vials are supplied with epoxy paint to keep the cost lower but the problem with epoxy is that they out-gas while in the packages which causes contamination. If you use a lab marker on epoxy paint, it can smear and rub off. If you write on the ceramic patches, they will not smear.

The patch is permanent and will not come off under any conditions even when being put into liquid Nitrogen storage. They are impervious to any solvents or alcohol.
